Salomon, which was founded in France built a reputation with their winter sports gear but have recently branched out into other backcountry and mountain activity gear including trail running shoes. The Salomon SpeedCross 2 is a mean and lean trail shoe that is appropriate for both trail racing and training.
The SpeedCross 2 trail shoes are patterned after the British fell running shoes that have a close, sock like fit and deeply studded soles. These lightweight but tightly gripping shoes are about as close to a minimalist shoe that a trail shoe can come. While they are light and tight the SpeedCross 2 still offer considerable protection from trail debris with a tightly woven anti-debris mesh upper. A wrap around mud guard and protective toe cap provide further protection from sharp rocks and roots.Salomon has included their one pull quick lace system for a fast and easy way to secure the shoes. You simply yank on the lace pull tab to your prefered level of tightness, release the lock clasp and tuck the excess lace into a convenient pocket on the tongue.We tested the Salomon SpeedCross 2 shoes on both moderate and extreme trails in dry and snowy conditions. We found the the deep aggressive tread was able to handle even the most sloppy and slick slopes with relative ease. The negative comments on the tread from testers was that they felt a bit unstable on road transition areas because of the very large and aggressive lugs, but this shoe is definitely intented for off road use rather than smooth pavement.
Our testers managed to find a few creeks to run through and found that water resistance of the mesh upper was good but that the dry time was just a bit long. A Gore-Tex shoe would provide superior water resistance but these SpeedCross 2 shoes gave a good combination of decent water resistance with superior breathability - much more breathable that a Gore-Tex shoe.All of our testers agreed that the Salomon SpeedCross 2 trail shoes are light, fast, minimalist trail shoes that are excellent for both racing and training but are really designed for running fast. They liked the low profile and felt there was just enough support to protect you from trail hazards while maintaining their minimalist design.Features: Upper - Anti Debris Mesh
