Spring Training for Winter Competitors


Rest? Who needs rest! You trained and raced hard all year long, including through the winter season. Now it’s time to get ready for the new training and racing year. You never quit training so you don’t really need spring training do you? Not so fast - maybe you could use a bit of spring training. Your spring training need might start with just a bit of recovery. Competitive distance runners are tough, but even the toughest need some recovery time now and then.
 
The winter competitor spring training program is designed to provide you with some active recovery to rejuvenate you both physically and mentally and then safely and effectively rebuild your fitness and strength to a level that will allow you to smoothly transition into your new running season program.
 
This is a 4 week spring training program that uses one workout per day/four to six days per week with one to three rest days per week. There are five individual training schedules included in this program. The first is a 4 week recovery schedule that I suggest you start with to allow your mind and muscles to properly recover and strengthen after your hard racing year. You can then move into one of four spring training plans. The proper schedule for you depends upon your specific spring training goals, your strength’s and weaknesses. The four spring training plans are basic spring training, endurance emphasis, stamina emphasis and speed emphasis.

This spring training plan includes four individual 4 week spring training schedules and a recovery schedule. You pick the schedule that is most appropriate for you. Schedules included are a generic four week schedule that uses multi pace training to give you a well rounded program; an endurance emphasis program for those that prefer classic base training or that need to work on overall endurance; a stamina emphasis program that focuses on improving your stamina and lactate threshold and a speed emphasis program that concentrates on build speed and power early in your training program.

Also included in each program is a spring training strength program and warm up cool down drills and flexiblity exercises.

Each of these spring training plans include detailed workouts and specific training paces designed to help you rebuild your fitness to a level that will allow you to safely and effectively resume your full speed training routine.
