Even running had it's dark ages. Believe it or not there was actually a time when women were not allowed to run in some races. Grete Waitz blazed the trail for women runners. During those running dark ages when women were not allowed to compete in long distance Olympics races, a leading race director actually uttered the following words:

"I'm not prejudiced against women....they just can't run in my race".

Grete Waitz lead the way for women runners by winning nine New York Marathons and five World Cross Country Championships. She would compete in the first Women's Olympic Marathon, winning a silver medal.
