Your core strength is a critical and often ignored part of strength training. A strong core is vital for maximizing both your endurance and power. Running velocity or top running speed is a component of running that is often ignored by many distance runners. Many runners believe that a high top speed isn’t a critical component of distance running. At first glance that appears to be true, since nearly all of your distance race paces are at far slower speeds than your all out sprint speed. It may appear that way, but in this case appearances are deceiving. Speed training is a very important part of your distance training plan. Speed training is important for all training goals from weight loss and fitness to marathon training, but it’s especially true if you are racing competitively or are attempting to set a new PR (personal record).
Speed training will develop your neuromuscular conditioning, improve your running economy raise your VO2 max (maximum amount of oxygen your body is able to process to produce energy) and vVO2 max (your running velocity at VO2 max), improve your stamina and increase your running speed. Those are all necessary attributes for improving your distance running performance. When you increase your vVO2 max through speed training, your slower distance race paces will be at a lower fractional percentage of your VO2 max. So you are able to run your races or training runs at a faster pace while still conserving those valuable carbohydrate stores. If you are a marathon runner, you will be able to avoid or delay the debilitating effects of hitting the marathon wall. Some runners tend to avoid strength training due to the mistaken belief that strong muscles will slow them down. That is old school thinking that has been proven to be incorrect by many current scientific investigations. Todays distance runners know that strength training is a critical part of their training from beginning levels to competitive distance runners. There are many ways that strength training benefits you as a runner. Some of them are obvious, such as improving your strength and power while others, such as increased stride length (air time), decreased ground contact time, improved running economy and injury prevention may not be quite so apparent. Injury Prevention - Strong muscles are not only much more injury resistant in themselves, but also give greater support to your joints and connective tissues, making you a much more injury resistant runner.
Running Economy - Stronger, more powerful muscles will increase the strength of your muscle springs or your ability to quickly release the energy accumulated by your running stride and mechanics. You are able to run faster and further while using less energy.
Increased Power - Strength training will improve the power of your muscles. Power is basically a measure of how quickly and efficiently you are able to use your muscle strength to generate motion. In the case of a distance runner, you are able to produce forward momentum and motion more efficiently.
